Leather jackets have always held an important position in the world of fashion. Quality, style and versatility have meant that they have stood the test of time and inspired a number of iconic fashion moments. Here we take a look at some of the most famous leather jackets and the interesting stories behind them.
1950’s Rebel – James Dean
James Dean was the original rock n’ roll rebel and has gone on to inspire many with his effortless Hollywood style. Films such as A Rebel without a Cause are filled with iconic images of Dean in his array of leather jackets, including a classic black jacket and red leather jacket. In 2011, Jennifer Aniston spent $12,000 on a James Dean jacket for her boyfriend Justin Theroux.
Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson was the king of pop, but he could also easily be crowned the king of leather jackets. The singer appeared in a wide range of videos in multiple leather jacket styles, including the red leather jack in ‘Beat It’ and the White Leather jacket in ‘Thriller’. In August 2011 June Milton Verret purchased the famous ‘Thriller’ jacket for $1.8 million at an auction in Beverly Hills. It’s been reported that he is planning to take the jacket on a world tour that will help to raise money for a range of children’s charities.
Trinity – The Matrix
Some of the most iconic costumes in film belong to Trinity and Morpheus in The Matrix. Both characters wear full length leather coats that are a key part of many of the memorable moments in the film. Keanu Reeves’s character Neo was also supposed to have a leather jacket, but costume designers felt that it didn’t have the right effect in the ‘bullet-time sequence’. Instead, Neo was given a jacket made from a much lighter material that flowed more dramatically.
